The Attire of a Harlot
- "And there a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. She was loud and rebellious, her
feet would not stay at home" (Prov. 7:10-11).
A Godly Woman
- "Who can find a virtuous woman for her worth is far above rubies" (Prov. 31:10)
- "Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised" (Prov. 31:30)
What is the Biblical Standard?
- Not expensive. "Do not let your adornment be merely outward -- arranging the hair, wearing gold, putting
on fine apparel -- rather let it be the hidden woman of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which is very precious in the sight of God" (2 Pet. 3:3-4)
- Not revealing. "that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel , with propriety and moderation,
not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing but which is proper for a woman professing godliness, with good
works" (1 Tim. 2:8-10).
Why the Biblical Standard?
- Men are stimulated visually. As a godly woman it is your responsibility to help your Christian brother keep his thoughts
pure. Immodest clothes are a distraction from worship.
- Godly women do not seek to draw attention to their bodies but to their character. What is your motive for wearing revealing
clothes? Do you really want to attract that kind of guy?
Give Me Practical Examples?
- Not too short. Not too tight. Not too low cut. Not too see-through. Hip hugging pants, hot pant shorts ("Daisy Dukes"),
short skirts, shirts which show off your abdomen or are cut low enough to show cleavage. These are the kinds of clothing which
are not appropriate in public, especially in church. Why not ask a godly woman for her opinion?
Who should do the correcting? Note: it is not appropriate for the men to speak to women other than
their own wife about their clothing. Godly ladies should lovingly approach other women if they have come a couple times in
immodest clothing (Titus 2:4). Speak very gently and compassionately, like a loving mother. Many women do not know any better
and it is more important to bring them to Christ.
