What can you expect on a visit to Cornerstone?

Let's answer that question for you in three categories...

Practical Matters

From what to wear to what time to be there...and everything in between.

  • We have found that children greatly benefit long-term from being in services with their family and the sermons provide a basis for family worship during the week.

Our Worship Experience

"The reading of the Scriptures, preaching, and hearing the Word of God, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord; as also the administration of baptism, and the Lord's supper, are all parts of religious worship of God, to be performed in obedience to him, with understanding, faith, reverence, and godly fear"

Regulative Principle of Worship

To quote our confession, "the expected way of worshipping the true God is instituted by Himself, and so limited by His own revealed will that He may not be worshipped according to the imagination and devices of men."  (1689, 22:1)

Stated simply, the corporate worship of God's people should be rooted in specific directions provided by God in His word.  Visiting at Cornerstone, you can expect a service of worship that is saturated in His revealed word.

Expository Preaching

"Expository preaching is that mode of Christian preaching that takes as its central purpose the presentation and application of the text of the Bible. All other issues and concerns are subordinated to the central task of presenting the biblical text. As the word of God, the text of Scripture has the right to establish both the substance and the structure of the sermon. Genuine exposition takes place when the preacher sets forth the meaning and message of the biblical text and makes clear how the word of God establishes the identity and worldview of the church as the people of God" (Al Mohler)

Congregational Singing

"We need to resist the idea that Christian worship is primarily the place for a performance. Performance is for concert halls and YouTube channels; Christian worship is for building up. And for that purpose, we should seek not entertainment, but participation" (Vern Poythress).  The content of our singing should be orthodox in its content and intended to communicate that content.  So then..."Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord" (Colossians 3:16).

Particulars

  • Although there are several excellent English translations of the Bible that carefully adhere to the original languages, most of the preaching and teaching will utilize the New King James Version (NKJV).
  • We observe the Lord's Supper on the first Sunday of each month.
  • The elders of the church administer the ordinances.
  • None of our services repeat.  Attend them all to worship, learn, and grow.
